The UK’s most famous rescue centre, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, has re-launched its popular Education Pack. The pack, aimed at teachers of children in Foundation stage through to Key Stages 1 and 2, has been updated and is now available on interactive CD to enable teachers to print the required sections when needed.
Developed by practising primary school teachers, the free pack assists teachers in delivering the National Curriculum in a fun and informative way, while also educating children about the joys and associated responsibilities of owning a dog or cat.
The pack includes colourful worksheets on curriculum subjects such as Literacy, History, Numeracy, plus Art and Design and Design and Technology, as well as providing creative ideas such as role play and poem writing. It also includes a film about the Home’s work, as seen through the eyes of a dog, posters and even a photo resource.
Pippa Matthews, from Noah’s Ark Nursery School, London said, “We integrated the pack into our theme of pets and how to care for them and made good use of the posters provided. I particularly enjoyed the illustrations and colours and, although it can be rather a serious subject, I thought it had been presented in a wonderfully positive and fun way.”
The Home’s Education Officer, Steph Collis, played an integral part in developing the pack. Steph said, “Pet education is very important to the Home, as is raising the profile of the Home among the next generation of pet owners. These children will be the future owners of rescue dogs and cats so we need to ensure they are well informed. We believe our pack does just that, and, as it’s free, no school should be without one.”
