The Birman Cat Club

This year’s Garden Party took place in wonderful weather in the garden of the Morningside Cattery in Sheffield. Hosts of the party were residents Dennis Hayward and Ron Mlynek.
The Morningside gardens were at their best, with the flower beds in full bloom, echoing the bright dresses and shirts of the many visitors, while colourful balloons and bunting added to the festive atmosphere.

When we arrived at 12.30pm, the garden was already full of people. Some were relaxing in chairs on the patio and others were busy around the stalls buying and selling.

There were all the usual stalls and games with the addition of several new and different ones. As well as the two rounds of bingo and ten minutes with the fruit machines, visitors took part in balloon bursting and a wonderful card game that had people queuing up.

A new favourite was a version of ‘Deal or No Deal’, with the finalists winning either major prizes or boobies. Major prizes included a vacuum cleaner, designer nightwear and beauty products, six bottles of spirits and £70 worth of car products, boobies included a stale bread bun and a squashed tomato.

Mid-afternoon a local cabaret artiste gave an interesting performance.
Dennis kept everyone busy with a full programme of entertainment, whilst Ron, in a suitable chefs outfit, organised the food and kitchen refreshments.

The auction towards the end of the afternoon was, as usual, full of fun, as visitors competed for the various goodies on offer.

The Garden Party raised £3,013 in total.

The main raffle prize was won by Stephen Round, who has two Birman cats, one of whom was a rescue. The second prize, winning ticket number 07132, was unclaimed. If you have this ticket, please contact a Member of the Birman Committee.

The garden was still full of people when we finally dragged ourselves away at about 6pm. Everyone seemed to have had a wonderful time, in a very worthwhile cause.

The Club sends sincere thanks to Dennis and Ron and their band of tireless helpers, and to all Members and friends who attended and made this such a happy occasion.

The Club’s next social event will be the Post Show Dinner on 4 November. Tickets now available. Details from Anne or Peter on 01993 843163 or panjandrum@ntlworld.com
Show schedules are now available from Roger Goodall at 62 Clifton Close, Swadlincote DE11 9SQ.
