The Pet Care Trust, the national charity promoting responsible pet ownership, pet care education and training, has re-launched its Pet Store Management qualification, the only nationally accredited qualification tailor-made for pet retailers and key for those wishing to hold a pet shop licence.
The new syllabus has been developed between the Pet Care Trust, NPTC, City & Guilds and livestock experts and covers sections on livestock husbandry needs and best practice advice to pass on to new owners. To coincide with the new nationally accredited syllabus, the Trust has revised its distance learning course material.
The new resource manual contains comprehensive sections on a range of species such as dogs and cats, ferrets, small furries, reptiles and amphibians, fish and birds, plus further units on health and hygiene, legislation and business management.
"There is certainly an appetite for further education in the pet industry, and this has been heightened by the Animal Welfare Act which comes into force in April,” said Meriel France, Education and Animal Care Manager at the Trust.
"People who have gained the qualification and can prove they have up to five years’ vocational experience can then qualify to become a licentiate of the City & Guilds of London (LCGI). Benefits of this include membership to some professional bodies, eligibility to join the City & Guilds Association, the use of the post-nominal letters LCGI, and to wear the approved gown, hood and mortarboard and attend the annual City & Guilds graduation ceremony.”
