Cats Protection Rescue Cat Awards 2008
Stars of stage and screen show their support for the Feline Oscars!

Cat-loving celebrities are showing their support for Cats Protection’s “Feline Oscars” - and owners of rescue cats can do the same by sending in their entries before 27 May!

Coronation Street star William Roache, as well as stars of television and theatre, Brian Blessed and Prunella Scales, are supporting the charity’s Rescue Cat Awards 2008, sponsored by Purina PetCare.

Known as the “Feline Oscars”, the awards invite cat owners to submit stories of bravery, heroism and survival about their rescue cat, in the hope that their favourite moggie will be crowned the nation’s top rescue cat at a glamorous awards ceremony on 1 August! The closing date for entries is 27 May, so the charity is still on the prowl for nominations to make these awards, now in their fourth year, the best ever!

William, famous for his role as Ken Barlow, said: “From supporting the awards before, I have been amazed by the various stories of feline bravery, courage and survival and I am looking forward to hearing more tales this year. Cats Protection does so much to help our feline friends and the awards are a great way to celebrate cats’ achievements.”

Brian said: “As a proud owner of rescue cats down the years, I know what adorable creatures they are, and how they constantly amaze their owners. It’s great to hear that there is a day where we will be celebrating the heroic and brave cats of rescue cats across the UK.”

Prunella too is very much looking forward to the awards. She said: “As a person who’s always been crazy about cats, I believe Cats Protection is doing an excellent and much-needed job, and I look forward to meeting the winning feline!”

Owners can enter their rescue cat – either a cat that was adopted from an animal welfare organisation or adopted as a stray – for one of four categories:

Hero Cat – cats that save the day!

Ultimate Survivor – Tales of feline survival after those nine lives have been spent
Best Friends – where a best feline friend has radically improved the quality of human life
Most Incredible Story – Belief-defying, true stories. If only puss could talk! (This category is run in association with The People’s Take It Easy Magazine).

The awards ceremony will take place at The Pharoahs Palace Hospitality Suite, which is part of the prestigious Tutankhamun Exhibition in London’s O2 Arena – a fitting venue given the ancient Egyptians’ love of cats.
