Taking action against pet obesity -
Hill’s Pet Nutrition announces Pet Slimmer of the Year 2005

WITH recent research from Hill’s Pet Nutrition revealing that a staggering 50% of our cats and dogs are overweight, owners are being invited to take action by entering their pets into the Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year Awards 2005.

Despite the recent focus on obesity in humans, the issue of pet obesity is becoming more important and the nation’s animals continue to pile on the pounds. The Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year Awards were launched by Hill’s Pet Nutrition to help raise awareness of pet obesity and also to encourage owners to think about their pet’s lifestyle in relation to their own.

Helen Goldberg of Hill’s Pet Nutrition said: “Just as with humans, health issues are closely linked with obesity in animals. Whilst it may seem like a loving act, it’s important for pet owners to understand that over-feeding their pet can actually be quite dangerous and can contribute to a number of health problems including arthritis, respiratory problems and even a shortened life expectancy.

“Obesity is already a real issue in society, and with further Hill’s research showing that people and their pets can actually lose weight and keep it off more effectively if they exercise together, we are trying to encourage pet owners to think about their animal’s diet too and get active with them so they can both stay fit and healthy”.

The overall winners of the Pet Slimmer of the Year titles will have their achievements rewarded with a fantastic prize of £2,000 of holiday vouchers and a year’s supply of Hill’s Science Plan, they will also be entered into the Hill’s European Pet Slimmer of the Year Awards taking place in early 2006.
