Supreme Winners’ Feature 2005 - Main Report

I alwayloving lad who loves to leap on to shoulders to perch like a parrot, or chase after toys that are thrown for him to retrieve, or sleep on a lap. He has been known to lead the others astray, and get up to mischief such as deciding that the packaging on a pack of flour was fun to play with, so took it out of the cupboard, to shred it on the kitchen floor – we’ll leave it to the imagination what happened to the flour! A typical Ocicat really! Brilliant!

Best of Variety Persian Neuter
UK GRAND CHAMPION & GRAND PREMIER CUSHKA PEPITO
This super lad, is aged four years and is owned and loved by Jim and Julie Goddard and bred by Gloria Neale. Julie continues, “Pepi is a quiet sort of chap, happy to watch the world hurry by. We have been so lucky because he doesn’t mind being show prepared and generally takes show days in his stride, no doubt looking forward to his plate of prawns when he gets home.

He has done well on the kitten, adult and neuter benches, and has the haughty look of a superior cat, which he frequently uses on the opposition! Pepi has been Overall Best in Show twice on his way to becoming a Grand Premier this year, adding to his wins over the years. He is a softy and a total Daddy’s boy, living a life of luxury!

We were absolutely delighted when he won BOV Persian neuter having been so close on previous occasions. The win was made all the more special because his breeder, Gloria Neale, was there to see it. You might have heard her scream of delight when Pepi was finally picked out as the winner!

Best of Variety Persian Kitten Supreme 2005
ZENDIQUE READBETWEENA LINES

Owner Anna Tonks told OUR CATS, “Iggy Pop’ as he is known at home is a seven-and-a-half month blue tabby exotic kitten, bred by Jane Allen. Iggy is a real character, full of life and not afraid of anything. He loves to play with anything and everything, ranging from picking bits out of bowls of pot pourri and carrying them around the house to chasing round playing with the hoover. He has a bit of a foot fetish so toes are not safe around him unless you want them nibbled! He is also transfixed by the bath and often tries to get in with me!

Consequently, he does not mind in the slightest being prepared for shows and just sits purring away while he is bathed, blow-dried and groomed. Iggy loves his food, particularly biscuits and crunchy nut cornflakes if he gets the chance!

Iggy’s Best of Variety win at the Supreme was his fourth Best of Variety Kitten win of his career. His other wins were at the East Sussex, Kentish and Tabby Cat Club shows; at the latter, Iggy was also Best Overall Exhibit. Iggy has now finished his kitten show career but will be back on the show bench in the New Year on the trail to become a Champion!

BOV Siamese Kitten
JOMESE JACKTHELAD

Owner/Breeder, Mrs Joan Pounds, said, “As a relative newcomer to the cat fancy, I was honoured to be trusted, in 2004, with Tikindi Infinitesse, bred by Barbara Summers. I was over the moon when she won BOV Siamese Kitten at the Supreme 2004. She duly had her first litter by Celia Simpson’s Johpas Galileo in April 05 and it is her son, Jomese Jackthelad, who took BOV Siamese kitten at the Supreme this year.

Jack and his sister Jomese Jeanie Blueyes, who are both blue points, have to date, been unbeaten in their kitten classes, although Jeanie always loses out to Jack for BOB!

Jack is a much loved family pet, being one of five Siamese and a Birman / moggie cross. He is very laid back and affectionate and is a complete softy who often wins the judges’ hearts at shows, when he rolls over to have his tummy tickled! He has a wonderful temperament for showing, and from his first outing has seemed to enjoy playing to his public. He won many amused glances at the Supreme as he curled up asleep on his velvet cushion in his sleigh. He also still likes to suckle from mum sometimes!

To win BOV Siamese kitten twice in succession, and with my own-bred kitten this year, is a dream beyond my wildest expectations. Showing and breeding Siamese has been a very steep learning curve, one that I still have far to climb - but I am well and truly hooked!”

Editor’s Note
On 2 December, Joan wrote to tell me some tragic news, “Sadly, I have to add that my beautiful and much loved Tikindi Infinitesse unexpectedly died on Tuesday, 29 November. She appeared fit and well and in no way ill, but sadly had a pyometra that she showed no signs of whatsoever until the uterus burst and she went into sudden and fatal toxic shock. It is so hard to believe that she could have won at the Supreme one week and then be dead the next, aged just one year and eight months”.

I am sure everyone reading this will extend their sympathies to Joan and think of her over the coming weeks.
Chris

Best Non-Pedigree Pedigree Lookalike
Tallulah

Barbara Bower, Tallulah’s owner, wrote, “Tallulah is a little ‘curly girl’ of unknown, but obviously Cornish Rex related, ancestry. I got her as a rescue cat about five years ago. At home she is a quiet cat but took to cat shows like a ‘super star’. In her pen she plays to the gallery and enjoys being handled and fussed. I love her very much and am very proud of her. To think that nobody wanted her and now she has won one of the top awards at the Supreme, for the second year running! She is a very special cat who lives, and is ‘in love with’, with my black Cornish boy (UK Gr Pr Gremaca Meatloaf)!
BOV British Shorthair Adult
GR CH WELLMAR ISABELLA

Owner/breeder Miss J. Martin, wrote to OUR CATS, “’Izzy’ is a very loving cat at home and loves a fuss, but is very shy of strangers. Fortunately this does not worry her at shows, where she behaves and handles very well. I was astonished that she was Best of Variety, knowing that she had been chosen over the ‘big boys’. I have only been showing her for the past 18 months and she has risen to Grand Champion, recently gained her first Imperial Grand and won her first UK at the Supreme. She had a wonderful litter of kittens, earlier this year and one of her daughters has gone to live and be shown, in Colarado!
Best of Variety Oriental Kitten
PASHTAN VALLIENT
Sue Miller, owner/breeder, told OUR CATS, “I was delighted with “Val” (yes, I know he is a boy but just think of Val Kilmer!) at the Supreme. He has had a wonderful show career to date, being Best Oriental kitten at the Wiltshire, Overall Best Oriental Exhibit at the West of England, Overall Best Oriental Exhibit at the South Western Counties, Best Oriental Kitten at the Caesarea and of course, Best of Variety Oriental kitten at the Supreme! I shall wait in anticipation to see what he does in December and then in January, of course, he will be playing with the big boys!

“Val” is very soppy and still loves his mum Pashtan Lotto very much, although he is expecting to become a Dad next month; a task he took to with relish before he went to the vet. He spends most of his time sprawled in front of the Aga with whatever kittens are about, although this is not all altruistic because if he can get a quick suck off a passing mother he will. I feel he has no shame at all!

Best Non-Pedigree Longhair and Supreme Non-Pedigree Exhibit
CHARLIE

Charlie’s owner, Mrs Josie Oliver, told OUR CATS about her lovely boy, “Charlie is a fantastic little cat, with many BIS over the past four years. He is always the same, very laid back and never gets upset. He loves going to shows, standing on the judge’s bench and looking around at everyone. He always purrs to the judges, and has a wonderful temperament. In fact, he loves everyone, and everyone seems to love him! He first won in 2002, so to take him back in 2005 to win again is an unbelievable experience.

Charlie was hand reared as a tiny kitten by a lady who ran a Rescue Shelter, in Saffron Walden. When she died, Marianna and myself took on the cats in the shelter and moved them to Great Sampford where Moor End Cat Shelter began. He grew up with eight elderly cats and still spends time with them, and when we get back from a show they come running to meet him and share his special treat of cooked fish or chicken.

He is a very special non-pedigree, and we love him to bits!”

Best of Variety Persian Adult
CHAMPION VILLIERS ANNA MARIE

Owner/breeder, Mrs J. E. Rouse told OUR CATS, “I was just thrilled to bits that Anna Marie won BOV. In my opinion, this award, at the Supreme, is the highest accolade any breeder can wish for. Anna Marie is from an old line, I rescued her Mum and after several unsuccessful matings, she eventually rewarded me with two wonderful kittens! Anna Marie is the sweetest girl and a full-time “Paddy Paw” cat – she is always happy! My thanks to her judges, Mrs Janet Ashman and Mrs Christina Dugdale, for making me so very proud and giving me a day I will never forget!”

Best of Variety Semi-Longhair Kitten and Supreme Kitten
COONTASTIC XAVIER

Sam’s owner, Sue Wilkinson, wrote, “Coontastic Xavier, bred by Angie and Rocco Barletta, is better known as Sam. He was one of a large litter that had to be hand-reared by Angie. He has an exuberant and confident personality and is a very loving and gentle cat. He loves his bath (thankfully) and seems to think cat shows are a really great day out.

I had been sent photos of this litter (Dotcom Comanche X Moulincrecy Ultrawild Imp) and when they were about ten-weeks-old, my daughter Saffi and I went up to Kent to see them. There were two silver tabby and white boys I was looking at. At this time, Sam looked “quaint” to say the least.

HUGE ears and absolutely enormous white feet! Rather ‘Gremlin’- like! Also very lively! The final choice would be made when we came up to collect the kitten. As it happened, in the end, Sam picked me. All the kittens were playing nicely except one, a whirling dervish doing a “ Wall of Death” around Angie’s bedroom... until he landed in my lap rolled over on to his back and started purring! Sam came home with me.

The Supreme was one of the best and worst days of my life! Due to a dog judging appointment, in Exeter, made sometime ago, my husband, Peter (who doesn’t “do” cat shows”), was deputised to take Sam to the NEC. We hoped that morning, as Peter set off, that our kitten might win his class, and if lucky, BOB. Certainly, I never dreamt he would go all the way to the top! Fortunately, my daughter Saffi was at the show, showing her two cats and she, along with the Barlettas, managed to guide and support Peter through a very busy and stressful day!

Thankfully, I was able to keep in touch via my mobile and text messages and keep up with proceedings. It was a long drive home as I had to keep stopping for updates of Sam’s progress. Neddless to say, I floated home in the end, thrilled to bits with our first ever win at the Supreme and hardly able to believe that our Coontastic Xavier was Supreme kitten... a really memorable day, that we’ll never forget!”

Best of Variety Burmese Kitten
ROSSIKHAN ALPHA MALE

Chris & Chris Bone, owners of Rossikhan Alpha Male, told OUR CATS, “Alf (pet name) is our Lilac Burmese, just eight months old and to date has won many firsts and Best of Breeds as a kitten but his main achievement was gaining Best of Variety Burmese Kitten at the Supreme this year.
He is known as Alf to his friends and lives in the Meon Valley in Hampshire with his prospective Molynmeux wives, Champion Incaheuxts, Champion Florentina and Sweetpea alongside our two dogs (Rory the Scottie and Meg the Lurcher) and all six are often to be found asleep together. Alf has the habit of trying to climb up the chimney and at the moment looks more like a Bombay than a Burmese. Luckily he is not being shown this week! Our thanks to his breeder, Janet Wilshaw.”

Best Shorthair Non Pedigree
SUSANNA

Linda Hutchinson, owner of Susana told OUR CATS about Susana’s story, “I adopted Susanna from Ely and District Cats Protection when she was a kitten who had been rescued from a house with domestic violence. One of my much-loved tabby cats had recently died and I initially chose Susanna’s sister, Lucia. However, I have a real soft spot for torties and as I could not choose between the two, I decided to adopt both. I named Susanna from Mozart’s opera, The Marriage of Figaro.

Susanna started to attend Cat Shows at the age of fourmonths, winning Best in Show at her first show. She had a really successful first year, winning Best Shorthair Non Pedigree at the Supreme in 2003, aged only eight months. At home, Susanna is a typical naughty tortie – she opens boxes of food and helps herself to the contents and looks upon the cat-proof fencing as a challenge to be overcome. However, at shows, she leaves her naughty streak behind and shows only her friendly, cuddly and affectionate side.

At the 2004 Supreme Show, she again won the Tortie and Ginger Female class but was beaten for the group by the Ginger male, Duke, who went on to become Supreme Non Pedigree. This year, the same two cats won the classes, Susanna the female and Duke the male, and I could hardly believe it when the judge announced that, by a whisker, the group winner was the female, my little Susanna. Winning the group in itself made my day, but when she went up onto the stage and beat the other four group winners for Best Shorthair, this really did exceed anything that I could have hoped for. Susanna took it all in her stride however.

One of the really good things for me about the Supreme Show is that, unlike Crufts for the dogs, there are classes for non-pedigree pets. This allows rescued cats, like my little Susanna, to take their place amongst the best cats in Britain!”

Best of Variety Burmese Neuter
UK GR CC & UK GR PR MINAHTO SHIZUKANA

This beautiful BOV is owned/bred by Gill Allen who writes, “Suki is a lilac Burmese aged ten-and-a-half years. The Supreme this year was a terrific year for us, as Suki collected her second UK Grand Premier certificate in as many years and achieved the UK Grand double!

It’s also the second time she has been BOV Burmese Neuter. Suki’s show career as a neuter has gone from strength to strength. I believe she achieved her title in just nine shows (eight being the minimum possible).

She nearly died in 2002 as a result of a pregnancy-related illness and had to be neutered. For ten days she hovered on the brink as her vet, Gerard Clarke of Willett House, Staines, did all he could to save her. Eventually, he sent her home, and it was make or break. Luckily she rallied and the rest is history. All Suki’s wins since then have been dedicated to Gerard!

Suki is a very placid cat, and loves the radiator beds at home, never minding who else happens to have got there first! Her pedigree name is Japanese and means “calm”. She has very little fear of anything and enjoys going out in the garden into the enclosed run, where she sits very still and watches the local foxes! She’s one of five cats in the Minahto household – a recent kitten addition from Claire Lewis’s Fandango line has been met with warnings of “I’m the top cat round here and don’t you forget it!” Her sister Sharni is a Premier, her mother Min (after whom my line is named) is a Champion and her uncle Pickle was Best Pet Burmese at the Burmese CCS this year – so she’s part of a winning family. There are several other Minahto cats on the show bench that have also done well – many thanks to their owners and slaves! And I owe all our successes to my friends Julie and Ian Bryer, and Rosie and Barrie Alger-Street, who have been great supporters along the way”.

Best of Variety Semi- Longhair Adult
MULLYCOONZ BUDWEIZER

Susan Chant, owner of ‘Bud’ (bred by Mike and Trina Briggs) wrote,“Bud is a very gentle, loving and laid back cat, who is adored by all at home. It was not until the day before the show that I decided to take him as I thought he was not mature enough for the grand class.

You can understand what a shock it was when he was awarded the Grand certificate in his class against such beautiful cats, then to get the BOB and the BOV was an even greater shock - and what a day! It is one that I will never forget. Every body was so wonderful with their congratulations and I would like to thank them all for their kindness. Also I would like to thank the judges Mrs Gregory and Mrs Price for awarding Bud his wins!

Best of Variety Oriental Adult
SAIKOU MISSISSIPPI MUDPIE

Owner/Breeder, Ms Kim Baines, gave OUR CATS some information about her boy, “At home he is known as Muddy, Mudpie was a nickname given to him as a tiny kitten because of his colour. Although it was obvious that he was a caramel right from the start, unlike any colour I had seen before. His win at the Supreme was a complete shock - I just went for the day out, and a bit of shopping. I thought he may stand a chance at an IC, but did not expect him to go any further. Muddy took all the judging even the trip across the stage at the end in his stride. He is incredibly laid back, and seemed to enjoy his day. As well his BOV win, the countersigned IC he was awarded in his open, I believe, gives him the three needed to count as a qualifier to help this gorgeous colour achieve Championship status.”

Best of Variety Siamese Neuter
IMPERIAL GRAND PREMIER TIANLEX FULL MONTY

Monty is owned by Dr Jane Muir-Taylor, bred by Mrs.Pat Cook. Jane told OUR CATS, Monty has the most wonderful nature and is the perfect show cat as he loves the attention and fuss he gets at the shows. He absolutely loves being on stage with an audience which he proved at the show.

He is the most delightful boy as he has inherited his father’s gentle temperament and his mother’s laid back attitude.

Monty has had an amazing year winning 19 Grand certificates one UK Grand Certificate and five Imperial Grand Certificates.

He has an impressive 2004 & 2005 Best in Show record, this year’s wins were; Best Siamese Neuter Shropshire Show 2005, Best Exhibit Seal Point Siamese Show 2005, Best Siamese Bedford Show 2005, Best Exhibit Breed 32 Show 2005, Best Exhibit for the second year running Siamese Cat Association Show 2005, Best Neuter Kensington Kitten & Neuter Show 2005, Best Siamese Three Counties Show 2005, Best Male Neuter Lilac Point Show 2005 and for the second year running Best Exhibit Siamese Cat Club Show 2005.

He became the very first Siamese to gain the Imperial Title, which he had done just two weeks before the Supreme Show at the Siamese Cat Club Show. Winning Best of Variety Siamese Neuter at the Supreme has really ended the year on a high note!”

And There was More!
Both Hills Pet Nutrition Ltd and Royal Canin (UK) were supporters of the show and their generosity is much appreciated. There were lots of charity stands too, well stocked with Tombolas, raffles and goods.

There were many other wonderful trade stands at the Supreme and because of my judging activities, I only got to visit a few, towards the end of the day. However, I could not miss Snuggers Refurbs Lts as they were situated opposite Ring number 9! They are a small family business located in Derbyshire.

They manufacture heated products for animals. Their range of products includes heated pads in five sizes, heated igloos (Moonshells), heated open beds, heated kittening units and much more. Please see their advert for contact details.

The Club Row always attracts a lot of interest and this facility gives the clubs a great opportunity to educate and inform visitors to the show. I was rather sad that when I visited the Burmese Cat Club stand at the end of the day, I had ‘just missed’ seeing their rescue cat! The people who ‘man’ Club Row are to be commended. They give up their precious time and have a long day – all for the sake of their favourite breed.

Of course the show’s success depends upon a great the hard work put in by so many great people. Everything is under the careful eye of Show Manager, Julia May. There are too many individuals to mention but I hope you will join me in thanking everyone for giving us another wonderful and memorable day.

Just to say a very special thank you to the Supreme Best of Variety stewards for giving up even more of their time on a very busy day, especially after completing a full days stewarding for their own judge for the rest of the day. My sincere thanks for being so punctual & ready to perform yet again.

My thanks also to their respective judges for releasing them to assist.

To TERRY SANDERS for his superb handling of the Persian BOV winners, believe me nobody does it better, he has it down to art form and really gets the best from his exhibits. A regular for this section and has handled many former Supreme winners to prove the point, handling every exhibit with amazing expertise & ease to the best possible advantage. A good day for the Chinchillas with two Best of Variety wins the first being the adult, ROUSE’S CH VILLIERS ANNA MARIE. Kitten winner was the Blue Tabby Exotic TONKS’ ZENDIQUE READBETWEENA LINES. The other Chinchilla was the well known neuter GODDARD’S UK GRAND CHAMPION & GRAND PREMIER CUSHKA PEPITO.

Another of my regulars is SUE KIRK for the semi-longhairs, Sue has been eating her spinach and building up her muscles, which is extremely lucky as she needed them, with a Maine Coon being the Best of Variety in every section. Two of whom went on to become Supreme winners this year. I always find it amazing that despite the size of the exhibits, she can still manage a smile throughout. Well done Sue, perseverance does pay off.

The first to test out Sue’s physique was the Red Tabby CHANT’S CHAMPION MULLYCOONZ BUDWEIZER. Managed to have breather with the kitten who was the Supreme Kitten winner WILKINSON’S COONTASTIC XAVIAR, a Black Silver Tabby & White. Following that with not only the Supreme Neuter exhibit but also ultimately the Supreme Exhibit SUPREME UK & IMPERIAL GRAND PREMIER DAIRYMAINE CHESTATON another Red Tabby and no stranger to the proceedings or indeed Sue as she was also his handler in 2003 when he became Supreme Kitten (except then he was marginally smaller) today he stretched Sue’s arms to their limit.

Many congratulations two fold to fellow judge SUE LORTON-HOBBS who was stewarding once again in the British section, the first for her appointment this year to full judge status in the section and secondly and more importantly on her recent marriage. Sue is another who has proved herself over the last few years, her charges were a Blue Cream Adult, MARTIN’S GRAND CHAMPION WELLMAR ISABELLA. The kitten was a Blue BROWN’S KOLINGA ALATHEA. The neuter exhibit was a very soft clear coated Cream lad WILLIAM’S GRAND CHAMPION & PREMIER LORASTON DIK TRACY.

Always reliable & dependable ANNE-MARIE HEATH, who for a number of years now has assisted in the Foreign category, this is where the varieties becomes more extensive every year, this year no exception. First up was the adult, MOSS’ CHAMPION KEVONA JADE XAVIERA, a Blue Tortie Silver Shaded Tiffanie again has been up here in the past, being last years Best of Variety Kitten winner. This years kitten was the Red Smoke Devon Rex, CHALLIS’ MICAJAS BEEP BOP ALULA. Following up with the neuter and the first year of Championship status for the breed a Chocolate Silver Ocicat HUGHES’ PREMIER MERRYDANCER TROIKA, who I understand was made up to Grand Premier.

Another fellow judge, MICHELLE GARROD agreed to handle the best of the Burmese, as a full judge of the breed, she knows just how to make them look their best and proved to be a valuable asset for the section with her calm gentle approach, the adult was the Red male, ROWLEY’S GRAND CHAMPION PAPAGENA TOM TUCKER, who is also picking up Imperials. The kitten winner is keeping it in the family a Lilac, BONE’S ROSSIKHAN ALPHA MALE, his sire being the Burmese Adult winner last year. This years neuter was a Lilac female who again is thinking of taking up residence in her Best of Variety pen which she occupied previously in 2003, ALLEN’S UK GRAND CHAMPION & UK GRAND PREMIER MINAHTO SHIZUKANA.

Yet another regular and again another full judge in the section for which she was handling was JANE FRANCIS-WILSON, again always happy to take part. Her lead on was with the Caramel male, a breed which has not yet attained Championship status BAINE’S SAIKOU MISSISSIPPI MUDPIE. The Best of Variety kitten winner was MILLER’S PASHTAN VALIENT, a Red lad who has had his share of Best in Show wins. This was followed by another lad who is picking up Imperial awards to add to his high title CLEMENT’S UK GRAND PREMIER MOJIQUE MERCURY, a well known Black Silver Shaded.

Finally but by no means least was another trusty regular for the Siamese section, who takes a great pride in handling his charges in order to display them completely relaxed and to their best, it obviously paid off was CRAIG DRYDEN, Supreme Adult going to REED’S SUPREME UK GRAND CHAMPION SARNAU JAFFA a Cream Point, his first visit to the Supreme as his owner has judged here for the last few years. The kitten was POUND’S JOMESE JACKTHELAD a Blue Point following up on his success at the Siamese Cat Club show. The Neuter and very close contender was the son of the Supreme Adult & proving it runs in the family who also became the first Siamese Imperial title holder, obtaining his title only two weeks ago and Overall Best Exhibit again at the Siamese Cat Club show MUIR-TAYLOR’S IMPERIAL GRAND PREMIER TIANLEX FULL MONTY who was another Cream Point.

My appreciation also to the additional duo enrolled to make the final just little more nail biting, of KATHY MOULTON and also NICKY GOULTER with congratulations on her promotion to full judge status of Turkish Vans.

Hopefully you all enjoyed it, so spare a thought for the stewards who perform many duties during the course of the day, including fetching and carrying, general running about and not least those who stay right till the end and do their best to ensure that the best in their section, gets the best possible chance to win at the end.

To all the winners very many congratulations. BRAVO TO YOU ALL!
