The PDSA recently told OUR CATS about a very special cat they have been treating in Edinburgh….
An eight-month-old Edinburgh cat called ‘Novo’, has been given a new lease of life thanks to PDSA vets who performed an extraordinary operation on his left kidney and bladder.
Cuddly ‘Novo’ had been suffering from what seemed like a weak bladder. This can be quite upsetting for young cats, as they are such proud and clean creatures.
PDSA Veterinary Surgeon, Michelle Renwick, who treated Novo comments: “It’s unusual for a young cat like ‘Novo’ to be suffering from incontinence.
He is litter trained and wasn’t showing any behavioural problems.”

This suggested the problem was more serious and indeed, after undergoing a series of tests ‘Novo’ was found to have a major kidney and bladder defect. The tube (ureter) from ‘Novo’s’ left kidney didn’t connect to his bladder but completely bypassed it causing his incontinence. Surgery was the only solution.
“This was a very challenging and delicate surgical procedure,” continues Michelle. “The operation took over two hours and although I was happy with how it went, only time would tell if the surgery had been a complete success.”
Happily it was, and in less than 48 hours, ‘Novo’s’ left kidney and bladder were functioning as normal.
‘Novo’s’ owner, Stewart McDonald, comments: “Novo is such a sweet young cat and I was desperately worried about him. Now he has had his operation he is full of energy and acting like a young cat should! I can’t thank PDSA enough for helping him.”
