First ever World Animal Week!

OUR CATS readers are invited to join millions of people in dozens of countries, worldwide who are set to celebrate the first ever World Animal Week this October.

Spearheaded by international UN-recognised charity the World Society for the Protection of Animals, this global, celebrity-backed, initiative will highlight the importance of protecting animals.

Starting on October 4th, the week aims to remind people that animals matter, not only animals in the wild, but pets and livestock too. World Animal Week is a time to celebrate animals and the good work being done for them internationally and there is no limit to how people can get involved.

Michaela Strachan, presenter of BBC TV's the Really Wild Show, said: "World Animal Week is a great opportunity to show that you care about the welfare of animals. Get "Really Wild" and lets prove that we really are a nation of animal lovers."

World Animal Week also marks the welfare achievements that have been made over the past year, including:

A Universal Declaration for Animals being backed by more than 300 animal protection organisations in over 80 countries. So far, some 20 governments have indicated their support for the initiative.

The banning of foie gras production in Israel, formerly the world's fourth biggest producer.
Pakistan authorities stepping up efforts to eradicate bear baiting.

Politicians in Barcelona voting in favour of declaring it an anti-bullfight city and a vote in Sept 2005 on banning bullfights.

The International Whaling Commission voting to keep an international ban on commercial whaling in place in June this year, despite increased lobbying from pro-whaling countries.
