THE OUR CATS NEWSLETTER ISSUE 30

The UK’s first ‘Ultimate’ Pet Cat & Overall Royal Canin Winner at the Coventry & Leicester Cat Show - 25.2.06.

'Lacey' Ex-Feral

‘Lacey’ was one of four feral kitten cats born in a garden in West Bromwich in the West Midlands and rescued by ‘Midlands Animal Rescue Team’ seven years ago.

‘Lacey’, her tortie/white sister, ‘Verity’ and her two other siblings, along with their ‘mum’ proved to be very difficult to trap as they were living in a garden which was completely closed in by a six-foot fencing topped with broken glass, and the contactor had been encouraging them to come onto a dividing wall between the properties for food.
The difficulty was the wall was approximately ten feet high and necessitated using a step ladder for the exercise.

The trap was set on the wall with two clothes props underneath to keep it steady. It took two weekends to accomplish the rescue, and I brought the half grown kittens home whilst the ‘mum’ went for her little operation.

After a while, with all kittens hissing, spitting, biting and scratching, I decided they were getting too big for one pen, so the two black and white, brother and sister, went to another foster home whilst I kept ‘Lacey’ and ‘Verity’.

Every time I went to the pen to feed them, ‘Lacey’ would try and touch my hand, but if I tried to make contact with her she reverted back to hissing and biting.
Then, one day, she very tentatively head-butted my hand and started purring. What a day that was!

After all this time I could not part with her, and so she stayed, and so did ‘Verity’ (who, unfortunately dos not have the same temperament, although she has just started licking my finger!).

‘Lacey’ is a very special cat, and after only being a ‘show cat’ for just over five years, has already won approximately 400 rosettes and been ‘Best in Show’ Household Pet no less than ten times, and last October was the winner of the Royal Canin Western Challenge. Quite an achievement for a cat that at one time could not be handled.

At the Coventry & Leicester Show on 25 February 06, she excelled herself once again by becoming the UK’s first ‘Ultimate’ Pet Cat Class Winner (the only cat in the country to do so) and then becoming Overall Royal Canin Winner Midlands heat.
